What is the proper length that golf clubs should be?

I am going to resize my own golf clubs to fit me, I am 5'5'' and was wondering what the proper length would be?What is the proper length that golf clubs should be?from the top of my head, i'd say that at 5'5'', u'd cut an inch and flatten the lie angle 2 degrees from standard but you may want to make sure before u do. easiest way to get fitted is to walk into any big golf retail store like golfsmith, roger dunns(california residents) and its free and takes like 15 mins. another way to check your own specs is to go to pinggolf.com, they have a web fit program where u punch in all the measurements n it auto-configures for u.What is the proper length that golf clubs should be?
There is no proper length when it comes to getting custom clubs...case in point, I'm 6ft-5in tall...do you think 'off the shelf' golf clubs are going to be a perfect fit? No, they're not! I currently play with Titleist 990's (I know their old but I love em') and they're 1/2 inch over standard and 4-degrees upright....

So, to 'custom fit' your clubs to not only your height, but your swing, do what I did:

1: Purchase some masking tape...it's yellow in color and very, very thin

2. Go to your local driving range and buy a bucket (80-100)of range balls

3. Get loose and warm up for a bit

4. Take out an IRON and rip off a piece of masking tape just long enough to cover the face of the iron.

NOTE: You want the bottom of the masking tape to be at the bottom of the club face, so the first 3-5 'scoring lines' are taped up

5. Hit a golf ball, then look at where you made impact on the club face.

6. Hit another golf ball, again taking a look at where impace was made.

NOTE 1: If you're finding that you're hitting the ball more on the TOE of the club face, then you would need to RAISE the club to an UPRIGHT position and vice versa if you're hitting the club face towards the back of the heel.

7: Go through ALL YOUR IRONS/WEDGES following this sytem and don't be surprised if your longer irons (3/4/5) need to be 'flat', while your shorter irons (7/8/9/PW) need to be upright...or vice versa...as our swing changes ever so slightly when the club gets longer in length!

Hope this helps?

RME, JrWhat is the proper length that golf clubs should be?First off. If you have not done any club building or repair prior to this I would not do it. Like the others have said. Shortening clubs is not all that has to be taken into account here. Lie angle is probably more important than length. Unless you have a Lie angle machine...take them to someone that has both the knowledge and equipment to do it right.

If you are dead set to do it yourself.

The Average finished club lengths are: ( Note : There are no actual specifications, Most club Mfg's are somewhere around this range)

3 I 38.75"

4 I 38.25

5 I 37.75

6 I 37.25

7 I 36.75

8 I 36.25

9 I 35.75

pw 35.5

aw 35.5

sw 35.25

lw 35.25

Please remember that these lengths are not cast in stone.

Good luck whichever way you choose to go.
1 inch down from standardWhat is the proper length that golf clubs should be?All of the professional fitting stuff is great but dont underestimate your eyeballs. i am 6'4'' but i use standard length shafts and 1.5 flat lie because i have a low stance and my arms are long. when you are in your stance just look down and see (make sure you do it on a flat surface, not carpet), also watch your shots on the range, if you seem to hit a lot of pull's the club is to upright, pushes and its to flat.

as for the shafts i would really reccomend ordering new ones because cutting a lot off will dramatically chnage the stiffness, wieght distribution and kick point. What is the proper length that golf clubs should be?
Go get custom fit. No one on the internet is going to be able to say you're 5'5", your clubs should be this long. Club fitting takes more measurements than just height. you can forget about leg length, torso length and arm length. Also there may be other measurements that are important to club fitting.
Here is an excellent site with some wonderful options 4 U.What is the proper length that golf clubs should be?
