How can I work on my golf game mentally?

what usually affects my golf game the most are my anger issues, i usually shoot around 78 and today i shot an 87 due to my anger. How can i stay calm while im playing? How can I work on my golf game mentally?Learn to forgive yourself.......what I mean by that is that golf is a tough, tough game that no one has ever mastered. It is an individual sport that puts the pressure of results on us from the moment we tee up on the first hole. No individual likes to admit failure simple as that, no matter whether it's golf or life. When we hit a bad shot, we have no one to blame but ourselves and therefore must put that burden on our own shoulders. Unlike other sports where we can blame a team mate, another team or even the officials for a failure, we are all alone on that island of mistakes.

I used to suffer with the same anger issues as did my son who is now a professional level golfer and instructor. We both found that the residual tenseness, anger and pressure we put on ourselves would affect the rest of the round and thus affect our scores. I would tend to believe and "8" on a scorecard is far less damaging than the mental state that snow man puts us in. I also believe it's more the feeling of defeat that harms rather than anger.

My son and I both learned that the only way to recover from a bad hole is to get "revenge" on the course by taking a few pars and birdies. This allows the "pouting" to evolve into focus. I used to just finish a round after a killer hole. Now instead I am determined to get the 3-4 strokes back. Rather I eventually do or don't isn't the point. Turning a defeatist attitude into one of "being on a mission" can do wonders.

In a recent tournament, I took myself out of competition early because I was angry and tried to force the issue with my driver. When I stepped back and remembered what I needed to do things changed. It took me too many holes to recover that day, but after changing my attitude I played the final 8 holes to -1. Again, the damage was done, BUT what I learned from those last 8 holes spilled over to my next round where I finished 1 over. What a HUGE difference.

So learn to allow yourself a mistake or two. And when you have a bad shot or hole, forgive yourself and use determination to focus on "payback".How can I work on my golf game mentally?
Think about it logically. If you bogey one hole and birdie the next, you'll break even. There's no need to get upset about a hole because you cannot go back in golf. You can only go forward. Think about the positives of your round. I've had rounds where I've shot double digits better on the back 9 than I did the front 9. Getting angry will help no one play better because you're not focused on what you need to do anymore. You're focused on something you can't do anything about. One hole won't kill your score. How can I work on my golf game mentally? It's tough and easier said than done. I had terrible temper problems on the golf course during my junior and college days. Only you can make the decision to fix it and then go fix it. It's that simple, but tough to do. Remind yourself that it makes you play worse, and more importantly, look like a jackass out there. How can I work on my golf game mentally?
Here's the secret of golf...But you still have figure out how to do it...The Heel Leads the Toe

By Kelly Murray, NGCI

I'm visiting my mentor, patriarch of Natural Golf, good ole "Murray" Moe Norman. It's in the winter of the early '90s. We're on the range when we turned around and noticed a young lady hitting bunker shots. He said to me, "I want you to see this gal hit shots. She's the Canadian Junior Champion, 18 years old from French Canada." As we walked towards the sand trap I noticed she was wearing headphones and toiling away not noticing us. We got up behind the sand trap and looked down at her as she was hitting many bunker shots. Moe said, "Look! Look! What do you see? What do you see?" I described the obvious. Good posture, great execution and that her shots were piling up around the flag. Moe said, "That's not what I see. Not what I see. I see the elbow leads the wrist, the wrist leads the hand, the hand leads the club head and the heel leads the toe."How can I work on my golf game mentally?Focus on the present not on the past and future. Check out this website, by Michael Anthony (not the guy from Van Halen), I believe that he has a pod-cast with about 20 to 40 podcasts that are 4-6 minute in length to listen to. Great stuff:

stay focused. live one shot at a time. visulize on shot, nothing else.
Its called ' golf amnesia ' Got to let go of bad shots or putts and move on to the next. It can be difficult for sure, but not impossible.
