I want to get a golf shirt for my dad, but he's extremely picky about that kind of stuff. Can I get him a polo with two buttons or is there a rule somewhere that says all golf shirts must have 3.

There is no such rule. I've seen golf polos with 4 buttons. They even make full button down golf shirts. Does a golf shirt need to have 3 buttons?It really doesn't matter how many buttons a golf shirt has, there is no rule however i would definitely recommend that it certainly has a collar, some golf courses allow roll neck sweaters but i would go with the safe option of buying a shirt with a collar. A zip could be another option to consider, but its whatever floats your boat to be honest.
